Abercrombie & Fitch is expanding its footprint within the CBD industry. The national clothing chain will feature CBD products from Green Growth Brands (GGB), an Ohio based producer, on store shelves in 160 stores across the country.
Earlier this year, Abercrombie began stocking GGB CBD products in ten of its retail locations but quickly decided to expand its offerings. With 250 U.S.-based stores in total, the retailer will now sell CBD in the majority of its locations. Consumers will be able to purchase topicals such as CBD-infused lip balms and sugar scrubs.
“Abercrombie & Fitch understands how to connect with their target-customer … across the globe,” said Green Growth Brands Chief Executive Officer Peter Horvath. “They have incredible brand recognition in our current target markets and beyond.”
Although Abercrombie has made a major commitment to offering CBD products, it is not the only large retailer to do so. National pharmacy chains such as CVS, Walgreens, and Rite-Aid also have CBD products for sale at a number of locations. Wellness stores like Vitamin Shoppe and GNC sell CBD as well.
The deal with Abercrombie signals a big push by GGB to expand its retail presence. They already have partnered with DSW Shoes to sell CBD products at 100 locations.
Because CBD does not produce psychedelic effects like THC, it is appealing to large-scale retailers looking to cash in on the green rush. The trend seems especially pronounced since the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (farm bill) was passed in December. The bill legalized industrial hemp.
Despite CBD’s rapid mainstream expansion, producers are still seeking clarity when it comes to federal regulations. A recent public hearing was held by the FDA to address outstanding concerns, though it is clear that the process of outlining regulations will take some time. Earlier this week, the USDA announced its intent to release federal cultivation regulations by August.
